Founded in 2016, Layers & Lines is the organic evolution of a 20-year creative partnership. Building on past careers in brand marketing, creative direction and graphic design, we have developed a thoughtful, yet direct approach to collaboration, which extends to our transparent relationships with clients.
As designers, we appreciate the personal nature of our work: the transformation of our clients’ most intimate spaces. Rather than beginning a project with a fixed idea, we start with an open conversation about how each individual or family wishes their space to flow and to feel. We then consider both a client’s aesthetic vision and the architectural context of their home, cultivating a warm, lived-in elegance that is as functional as it is beautiful.
Most importantly, we seek to create stunning spaces that resonate with the humans that inhabit them. Prioritizing high-quality materials and handcrafted furnishings from independent artisans and respected brands, we strive to establish a modern take on luxury in which each object, color or texture contributes to a transportive design story.
Molly
Born and raised in NYC, Molly’s earliest design memory is the remodeling of her parents’ pre-war brownstone on the Upper East Side. Her mother, in particular, was an avid entertainer whose aesthetic instincts always felt ahead of her time. Later moving to Nashville and Santa Barbara with her family, Molly was able to witness the adaptation and evolution of her mother’s approach to home design from an increasingly sophisticated perspective. Following this visual interest, she enrolled in Hamilton College, where she majored in studio art and spent her summers interning at renowned New York art galleries.
Seeking a more practical application for her creative interests, Molly’s first job was in graphic design. After pursuing additional training at UC Santa Barbara in graphic design and digital communication, she spent several years honing her technical skills at a local agency. Relocating to Denver in 2006, she was hired as the senior designer—and eventually became the creative director— at a global investment firm. It was in this role that she and Kim first worked together, refining not only their aesthetic instincts but also how to communicate and collaborate with exacting C-Suite executives. This masterclass in client relationships, as well as a shared passion for interior design, laid the groundwork for the founding of Layers & Lines.
Kim
Growing up in the Southwest, Kim intuitively felt drawn to the expansive vistas and tranquility of the desert. At the same time, international travel was an early influence on her design sense, having joined her father on business trips to Europe and Hong Kong throughout her formative years. After pursuing a degree in marketing from the University of Arizona, she moved to New York City—and continued to travel frequently overseas—working for such media networks as Starz Encore and Hallmark Entertainment. It was then, in early adulthood, that she began to develop her own design perspective, largely informed by the craftsmanship, colors, and patterns of the traditional handmade goods she discovered in Asia and India.
Continuing her career in creative marketing and global brand strategy, Kim soon rose to director-level roles, guiding the holistic communications for a series of telecommunications and financial services companies. It was during this period that she met Molly, beginning a close collaboration that grew into an enduring friendship and entrepreneurial partnership. To this day, Kim continues to draw on the whole of her personal and professional experiences for each residential project, approaching the curation of each client’s home through the lens of cohesive brand storytelling.
